To DIY For...

It's been a while since I visited those '50 Ways to Save Money' from the nice people at This is Money, so now I'm 'nurturing' my talents in a vain attempt to make some pennies - it's time to look at what's next...?

With my last pay day looming eerily over the way, now, more so than ever, it's important to save like a mad fiend.

So tip number 13 (eek!) is:

13. Do DIY
We're a nation of obsessive DIYers and for around £100 you can take a course at your local adult education college to improve the skills needed to tackle most household repairs. If the college runs plumbing courses you could soon be on track to wiping out costly call-out charges and extra insurance policies once and for all.
Saving: £100+

OK, OK so I know I'm desperate to get a foot on the property ladder, but this is one of those rare instances where it's actually a bonus to be a tenant. All that DIY malarkey is the Landlord's responsibility - yay! Fortunately, for us our landlord is fab, he's had everything tested and serviced, fixed the broken window and shower pole and got someone to fit a new outside light for us. Bless him.
Unfortunately, there are some landlords whose origins lie in the Wild West. If you're stuck with a cowboy, check out the CAB site for advice.
