Love of my Life didn't look too impressed when I showed him the plain white, designless packages of Smart Price food I'd just purchased from Asda. We're both foodies and while there's no denying that own brand is an absolute bargain it will be interesting to see if it packs any punch in the taste department, not to mention the nutritional one.
I have to say buying own brand food makes you feel kind of dirty. Not the bog standard Asda stuff, we often buy that anyway. But the Smart Price items in their nasty white bags. There's something about them that makes you want to hide them at the bottom of your shopping trolley and makes you feel the need to make excuses for your purchases.
That said, sometimes feeling dirty isn't necessarily a bad thing ;-) and if by doing so you're saving lots of money, then hey - bring it on!
It's hard to say exactly how much we've saved from buying own brand, as no two shopping weeks are the same for us and this particular shop wasn't exactly huge. But with pasta sauce at 27p and a pack of 12 crisps for 17p - it certainly sounds cheap.
But is it cheap and nasty...? Bring on the taste test...
