Who can resist a good old fashioned gossip, eh? Whether it’s a quick catch up with your Mum on a Sunday night, or an hour long chat with your friend following a frenzied Friday night out – us girls, just can’t resist picking up the phone and having a good ole natter.
And with our predilection for chit chat, it makes sense to check we’re getting the best deal on the old dog and bone.
Before deregulation in 1984 – you didn’t have a choice, it was BT (British Telecom), or, er, BT. Now the market is flooded with companies all vying for your talk time.
So, how do you make sure you get the best deal? A: Research, research and more research - time consuming, somewhat boring, but oh so necessary if you really want some cheap chit chat!
It’s been a long time since phone companies were just that, now they provide an array of different services, including your landline, TV, broadband connection and, in the case of Virgin Media, mobiles too. It pays to get an idea of what you want into your head before you start your research. Maybe you need a speedy broadband connection, a landline and some extra TV stations? But think about it more closely…how many TV stations do you really need? What do you really need from your broadband connection? How often are you going to use that phone, when and who are you going to be calling?
Really think about what you want before you start your research. There are a vast array of packages available from each company and if you’re trying to be a babe on a budget, it pays to stick to what you actually need instead of getting lured towards the pricier packages with a load of things you’ll never use.
Weigh everything up. BT often gets a poor press for being a pricey provider, but when we weighed up the alternatives in our area it actually worked out to be the best value.
Here’s some of Babe’s top tips for getting a good deal:
1.) Factor in any additional equipment which you may need to purchase, especially if you’re opting for wireless broadband.
2.) Going for TV as part of the package? Check out Freeview first to see if that’s a viable way of bringing the cost down.
3.) Already got broadband? Be careful in changing your phone provider as some broadband connections only work on certain networks.
4.) Check out the various packages on offer with each provider, some offer inclusive free calls, or reduced rates at certain times - think about how and when you use the phone – to find the best package for you. If you’re not sure look back on your old bills to get an idea of your calling patterns.
5.) Don’t forget your mobile – utilise those free minutes instead of adding to your landline bill.
6.) Check out Internet phone calls – see this link on the BBC website, here. There’s potential for free international calls, but the other person needs to have the same technology on the same network in order for you to communicate.
As you can tell there’s really no shortcut to getting the best deal - its going take a bit of homework for you to get the right package for your needs – but it’ll be well worth it when you’re gassing to your friend about your latest love interest and the only thing you have to worry about is how she’ll react when you tell her what really happened that night!
