I'm reading Your Money or Your Life by Alvin Hall at the moment, and I have to say it's fab. I would recommend it to any babe (or bachelor for that matter) on a budget. It covers everything from figuring out how much you spend, to budgeting, saving, climbing aboard the property ladder, saving and investing. My only real gripe is that, in my opinion, you really need to read the whole book before trying out the exercises - but that's not really too much of a problem.
It's certainly made me re look at my finances, and also my priorities. He suggests saving at least three months of your salary, for what my Nan would term your rainy day fund. And while there's lots of information on jumping aboard the property ladder, he also suggests that renting isn't the evil that us Brits seem to think it is. It's made me realise the full danger of 100% mortgages - I always knew they weren't a great idea but never really fully understood why. Now I know and I'm gonna be trying to save for as much of a deposit as possible for our first rung. There's even chapters about buying shares and bonds for the more financially savvy.
I highly recommend this book - and if you're lucky you 'll be able to borrow it from you local library like I did!
